Use of carbon-fiber-reinforced composite implants in orthopedic surgery.

Carbon-fiber-reinforced polyetheretherketone implants offer several benefits over traditional metal implants. Their radiolucent property permits improved, artifact-free radiographic imaging. Their lower modulus of elasticity better matches that of bone. Their fatigue strength is greater than most metal implants. This article reviews the use of these implants in orthopedic surgery, including tre...

Carbon nanotubes reinforced electrospun chitosan nanocomposite coating on anodized AZ31 magnesium alloy

Chitosan based nanofibers containing carbon nanotubes were applied on AZ31 magnesium alloy via electrospinning. The magnesium substrate was initially anodized in a NaOH solution in order to improve the adhesion between the coating and substrate. Electrospinning parameters were optimized and homogenous nanofibers composite coatings were produced. Addition of carbon nanotubes reduced the size of ...

Biocompatibility of magnesium-zinc alloy in biodegradable orthopedic implants.

In this study, magnesium-zinc (Mg-Zn) alloy was investigated as a biodegradable orthopedic implant. MC3T3-E1 cell attachment, mineralization and osteogenic-specific mRNA expression were assessed for as measurements of the in vitro biocompatibility of Mg-Zn alloy. In vivo degradation of the Mg-Zn alloy and the accompanying new bone formation in the femoral marrow cavity were analyzed by scanning...
